While Netflix Marvel fans are anxiously holding their breath to see if Daredevil suffers the same fate as Iron Fist and Luke Cage, fans of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD can find relief in the fact that ABC just renewed it for another season, consisting of 13 episodes. This means that as the show moves into its sixth season, the writers will have the freedom to write a storyline where they aren’t in fear of the show being canceled like some of its other Marvel counterparts.
Season six will debut during the summer of 2019, a big difference from its normal fall season. Fans will also notice that the 13 episodes are a drastic cut from the normal 22 episodes, but ABC could order more episodes if it wishes to. A shorter season could mean trimming up any filler content for a studier show and it seems like Marvel is moving in a direction of shorter seasons.
Showrunner Maurissa Tanchareon spoke about them being unsure if the show was going to be renewed and how season five was written as a series finale.
“We’ll never end something without the potential for more story,” Tancharoen said. “That’s how we’ve ended every season because, whenever we’ve come to the end of all the seasons past, we go into that mostly not knowing until the very last minute, so we’re basically doing the same thing to close out Season 5. It can fit well as a possible series finale, and it can fit well as just another season’s end.”
