Episode five reminds us, as viewers; that American Gods is not interested in avoiding certain truths just because they make you uncomfortable. This series is dedicated to showing you the ugliness that unfortunately occurs every day and they do not sugar coat anything. It’s important to show these kinds of stories on screen and it plays an important theme in not only this episode, but in the series as a whole.

Shadow is confronted with the spirit of a man who was unjustly killed in Cairo long ago and it both brings him closer to the gods, yet confuses him as well. While he has proven himself as a worthy disciple of Wednesday’s, the gods clearly do not include him on all of their secrets and find some delight in knowing there are things he will never understand.

We see that despite Sweeney not having his luck around that he does indeed make it to New Orleans and Laura is not far away, realizing that Wednesday is certainly not a man to be trusted. Here, they meet Baron Samedi and his wife Maman Brigette and god, I loved this Cajun/Voodoo couple. The episode embodied New Orleans and you could feel the magnetic pull between the foursome the entire time they were on screen together.

For all my fellow MadWife fans, the end of this episode is certainly for us. It’s frankly amazing that scenes that were captured by fans from the horde in the second episode actually come to fruition in this episode and everything is this steamy, entangled scene between the four, and while I may have just spoiled what happens, believe me, you aren’t ready for this scene. It’s just that intense. And who is going to complain in seeing both Pablo Schreiber and Mustafa Shakir in their respective scenes?

I thought I would remain saddened by Tech Boy’s fate in the previous episode, but seeing the scenes in New Orleans, on top of the excellence that is Bilquis and Mr. Nancy cheered me right up.
