American Gods Season 2 Episode 4: Retiring a God [Spoilers]

It seems it’s the end of the line for one god, though; on a personal level, I hope it isn’t the last we see of him.

Remember in the first season when we all viewed Technical Boy as just the little shit who was really just a nuisance in the story? His transformation has grown in the second season and in the fourth episode, we are given a new dimension to this character. The fourth episode does show how this season is different than the previous one, but it’s a good installment to have in the middle season. We have more meat added to characters that were only touched upon in the first season and who have virtually no screen time in the book.

Mr. World has several frightening moments in this episode and Crispin Glover plays him so utterly well. Despite looking unhinged at several moments, he still holds onto the ability to absolutely exude an eerily calm exterior that solidifies him as the perfect choice for this character. And we even have a small Mr. World and Wednesday interaction that ends up with neither as the victors, but is still, essentially; a win for Mr. World.

There is something more than just meets the eye with New Media and though she just appeared, she is clearly on a path for power. That thirst for power and even Mr. World’s favor puts her at odds with Technical Boy and considering the character has become one of my favorites, next to Mad Sweeney and Bilquis; I’m very worried for Tech Boy with New Media around.

Speaking of Bilquis, this episode is heavy with scenes with her and Mr. Nancy and I am NOT complaining. There is such chemistry between the two and while they are steaming up the screen, they are also making poignant remarks that remind us how important American Gods is to the commentary of today’s society and our history that so many choose to ignore.

It’s hard for me to not spoil the events of this episode, which I do often with previous reviews; but I don’t want to take away from the character arc that is played out. All I have to say is, I’m so happy we’ve gotten a new layer to Technical Boy, one that I don’t think any of us saw coming.
