DC Comics: Wonder Twins #2 Review

Wonder Twins #2 (2019)

Variant cover by: Dustin Nguyen

Written by: Mark Russell

After being exiled from their home world, alien, shape-shifting brother/sister duo Jayna and Zan take on the traditional Earth custom of a high school field trip…to a local LexCorp prison? If they’re being honest, their after-school assignment from the Justice League is what they’re really looking forward to: taking on vampiric menace Drunkula, a villain from the League of Annoyance! And what’s this guy the Scrambler up to, anyway? Plus: Gleek debuts! – DC Comics

The one thing that I love most about Mark Russell’s writing for Wonder Twin, issues number one and number two, is that he does not overpower the story with, subject matter. Mark Russell uses subject matter to enhance his storytelling finding fun and compelling ways. Unlike what Cecil Castellucci is doing with Female Furies.

Unlike in the first issue where Mark Russell focuses on the fish out of water aspect of the story, because they are aliens on a new planet trying to fit in. This issue focuses more on imprisonment and addiction. I’m not going to spoil anything but there is a page where Jayna and Zan go to prison for a school trip and Jayna question everything the tour guide says. Talking about people going to jail for things they most likely did not comment, which is very relevant in today’s climate.

I mentioned that Mark Russell uses subject matter to enhance his storytelling finding fun and compelling ways but this is also thanks to the art by Stephen Byrne as well. Stephen Byrne creates this environment where not only adults can enjoy Mark Russell stories but kids can enjoy it as well. Filled with Byrne cartoon style drawings that is pleasing to the eyes.

This is a perfect continuation of the Wonder Twins story if you have not picked up the first issue yet, pick that up along with issue number two!
