Do you want to generate a heated debate? I mean besides bringing up Zack Snyder and the “Snyder Cut”? Talk about the possibility of Avengers: End Game dethroning the reigning Box Office Champ, James Cameron’s Avatar.
There’s no question that it would be a monumental feat. Cameron’s Avatar sits on top with an overall box office haul of 2.78 billion dollars. That’s a huge target to shoot for. The only film to come close recently was Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $2.06b worldwide. That in itself is impressive but it wasn’t enough to knock the King from his throne. But can the Russo Brother’s 22 film culmination beat the odds and be like Thanos and “reign supreme?” Recently, Box Office experts chimed in on the possibilities. Bruce Nash from the Numbers thought is was possible;
I think it’s … doable. I mean, Avengers: Infinity War did $2 billion. And you have to assume that Avengers: Endgame is going to do that or a little bit more, so the bar is two billion. Avatar was close to three billion, something that takes a lot of repeat views. Maybe there’ll be something that will cause people to go back to Endgame repeatedly. Some movie’s got to do it at some point and this is as good a bet as any, I think.
Exhibitor Relation Co. senior analyst Jeff Bock also believed it was possible but the stars would have align properly for it to achieve the once thought unreachable goal.
If this opens at $900 million, a billion worldwide and obviously people love it as much as it’s hyped-up for. That’s a lot of return business…it’s going to be very difficult to reach Avatar numbers. Now, that said, if China explodes like every body’s talking about, the pre-sales there are even more stratospheric than they are here. Asia has been a huge Marvel component, in terms of the box office lately. If Asia comes through with huge numbers, yeah, we could be looking at something that finally unseats Avatar.
If the record numbers of pre-ticket sales is any indication, If any film has a chance, it is End Game. Do you think it’s possible for Avengers to overtake the King?
