Spider-Man Far From Home Is An Amazing and Spectacular Finale To The Infinity Saga

The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children

You are probably asking yourself why would he begin his review for Spider-Man Far From Home with that quote.  I will tell you. You see Spider-Man Far From Home not only deals with the consequences from Infinity War and Endgame, it deals with consequences surrounding Tony Stark. The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Tony Stark/Iron Man and in Far From Home everything comes full circle. Kevin Feige was right when he said that Far From Home would be the end to the Infinity Saga.

Getting into my review I want to let you know that this will not give away any motives for Mysterio and I am going to stay as SPOILER free as possible.

Far From Home picks up not long after the events of Endgame, it delves some into the world recovering from “The Blip” – that is what they call the snap -and there is a touching “In Memoriam”. The opening to the movie covers all of this including the return of some of the snapped classmates. Very funny segement for sure.

The MCU’s Spider-Man has dealt with so much in such a short time. He was thrown into the middle of a Civil War, he took on domestic terrorism when all he wanted to do was go to his Homecoming dance, he fought and died in the Infinity War and he was resurrected and lost his mentor in the Endgame. A wise Aunt May once said

You do too much.  You’re not Superman you know

We see how Peter is dealing with the loss of Tony Stark who was like a father figure, a mentor to Peter. Thus the reason for my quote above which you will understand more once you see the movie. The film does not let you forget Tony or Iron Man at all. His image and presence is felt during the entire film. The world seems to be looking to Peter for answers. Is he the new leader of the Avengers? Where are the Avengers?

Despite all that Peter is still gearing up for a nice summer vacation with his classmates and take a step back from being Spider-Man for awhile. Of course where would the fun be in a Spider-Man film with NO Spider-Man?

The film has so many different tones from a superhero film, to a love story, to a road trip adventure film but they all blend together so well. I feel that is attributed to a great cast and some well placed action sequences. Jon Watts does a great job getting the best out if his cast and his apparent love for John Hughes films is felt as well.

The film’s plot revolves heavily around the glasses you see in the trailer, a gift from Tony, code name EDITH which stands for Even In Death I’m The Hero. Good old Tony always getting the last laugh

Spider-Man Far From Home has some of the best action sequences of any comic book film and there are quite a few. In between the action set pieces you get some really funny comedic moments that really help the pacing of the film flow nicely. For a two hour and nine minute film it really flies by.

I grew up a Tobey fan but I really feel like Tom Holland was born to play Spider-Man. The kid just has so much charisma and raw talent that really makes him stand out not only as a great Peter Parker but as a great Spider-Man. This is in no way a knock on Tobey or Andrew at all so please do not think that. I think the character Spider-Man is bigger than any actor playing him but I will not deny what Tom Holland brings to the character. He carries his emotions in a way that really makes you feel for him and that is attributed to Tom’s acting ability. He has the charm and the wit to be a complete package.

I said the movie was a love story and I mean it. From Peter and MJ….and Brad? Yes this movie deals with a love triangle. But that is not the only love story of the film and you will find out once you see it. Tom and Zendaya have so much great chemistry together and it just oozes out on the big screen. Haters can hate all they want but I really enjoy the MCU’s version of MJ and Zendaya plays her so well. Peter is like a lost puppy when it comes to MJ and she despite trying to act all tough and withdrawn really melts when she locks eyes with Peter. It is a great romance in the making and I for one cannot wait to see where it goes from here.

There is a moment between the two that really had the crowd losing it and it was really one of the highlights of the film because you are like, FINALLY!

Returning cast members Jacob Batalon, Angourie Rice, and Tony Revolori all get more screen time I felt and Tony’s Flash was more hilarious than ever. There is a little more to his story revealed in this movie that sheds some light on just why he acts the way he does. Hopefully this is explored more in Spider-Man 3.

The comedic relief award goes to J.B. Smoove and Martin Starr as the teacher/chaperones on the summer trip. Martin Starr gets more to do in this film and comedic chops are put on full display.

I have talked about Tom, Zendaya, Jacob and some of the other returning cast but I am sure you all are wanting to know about Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio. Well outside the basic information you have gathered from the trailers I cannot really go much further because it will spoil the film. Mysterio is one of my all time favorite Spider-Man villains and it is about time we finally got him in a live action movie.  Jake’s Mysterio costume looks so good on screen and is one of my favorite costumes in a Marvel film. When he is on screen his just commands it and really steals the show. The movie does a great job capturing his “mystical” power special effects.

I can say that Peter and Quentin’s relationship is not like Tony and Peter’s. Their relationship is more kind of big brother. Someone Peter can confide in, trust, and you see Peter let his guard down which really hurts all the more when you realize the truth of it all.

I also mentioned above how great the action sequences are but I can tell you that Far From Home has one of the most comic book accurate, bad ass moments of any Spider-Man film from sure. There is an illusion filled showdown between hero and villain that talking about does it no justice. You have to see it to be believe it but it was the BEST part of the film for me.

As I sit here ready to close out my review I have tried to think about what I might dislike about the film but I really cannot think of much. Some of the CGI in some parts was off but overall the film is visually stunning. The VFX team did a great job designing the elementals and I felt they looked really good. I bet it looks even better in IMAX and 3D.

I love what Sony and Marvel have done, giving us as many different Spider-Man costumes as we have gotten so far. From the Scarlet Spider inspired Homecoming home made suit to the Iron Spider concept. In Far From Home we get the Noir inspired stealth suit and the cool new black and red suit that really looks good. There is a cool sort of moment when Peter gets the new suit that is kind of a passing of the torch situation.

Samuel L. Jackson is always a lovely addition but I think the film could have done without Cobie Smulders Maria Hill. I just felt she did not lend much to story but I get why she was there.

I really enjoyed Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei’s awkwardness trying to hide their “secret” from Peter.  There is so much more I would love to talk about but it would spoil the film and this is a film YOU must see to believe. I would highly recommend not letting people spoil the movie for you.

In closing – I think Spider-Man Far From Home is the perfect finale for the Infinity Saga and I think fans will agree. Make sure you stay for both end credit scenes. Trust me, you wont want to miss them.

Rating – 4.5/5 “Spider-Man Far From Home is one of Marvel and Sony’s shining achievements and serves as not only one of the best Spider-Man films ever made but one of the best comic book sequel films as well.
