Now that the Fox/Disney merger is complete, some fans wondered if Marvel might get then the possibility of adding an X-Men character or Fantastic Four to the mix for Avenger’s End Game. Well come to find out, there is a reason that was not in the cards. As described by the film’s screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, they have to clear characters with Marvel/Disney legal teams before even thinking of adding them to their scripts. Because of that, they revealed that first they couldn’t legally use the characters until the Merger was complete. In addition, if they were to attempt that, they’d be essentially rebooting characters ahead of the release of Dark Phoenix in June which would be inappropriate as Markus explains in a recent interview with the New York Times:
I guess it’s done now [the merger] but it wasn’t done then. They still have an “X-Men” movie [“Dark Phoenix,” due in June]. You can’t reboot them before they’re done. “Sorry to completely screw you.”
Once the merger was complete, there simply wasn’t time or space to add the other characters without rebooting the characters for the MCU and that would still do a disservice to Dark Phoenix and all the work put into that film. As for the future, Marvel head Kevin Feige has stated that there are no plans for the X-Men in their current 5 year projection, so fans will no doubt need to be patient.
